The Problem
As the client operates across multiple countries and employs a large, geographically distributed workforce, they needed cross-cultural training for their workers in a digital format, without the need for on-site training. They intended to cut costs by replacing this specific training with complete digital training, but they were unsure how to transfer such soft skills digitally.
My Role
My responsibility was to identify first what format would serve best to fill this gap without personal presence. The client firmly believed that such soft-skill training would require some level of personal presence, but cutting costs was important. I had to find a way to convince them first that it was indeed doable with digital tools only. I had to secure the right tracking methods too, but I was sure that once the method was approved, reporting would be the easier task to manage.
The client is a major international steel and mining group with operations spanning mining, metals production, processing, and distribution.
From the first meeting with the SME, I was able to pinpoint at least 4–6 personas, and potentially 10–13 exact conflict situations in daily operations that stem from intercultural misunderstandings. These tensions don’t necessarily lead to terminated contracts but definitely hinder smooth daily communication, which affects their business operations too.
They knew all about textbook training, but this time they wanted something different. Something that really could make a behaviour-level change after completing a digital learning module. This gave me a great opportunity to implement a scenario-based simulation program. I had enough recorded situations at hand, with enough personas; the only question was how to turn that into engaging and functional simulations.
I built the interactive video branches from a detailed storyboard, first testing the click-based scenarios with a prototype. After positive client feedback, I implemented the full interactive video-based program with carefully planned paths and branches.
