Refugee Training

The Problem

This project was initiated by a German NGO whose mission is to help refugees in Germany integrate into different parts of life. The common challenge is always budget for any sort of project, especially when it comes to digital learning solutions. But at the same time, there is no question that training volunteers, or recruiting and hiring personnel for constant training, is costly as well. A blended learning solution would help them.

My Role

My assignment was first to create an infrastructure that is easy to implement and maintain. The topics vary across a wide range, including bureaucratic challenges, daily life challenges, logistical issues, language, psychological support, and more. I had to create a clear structure for the platform and its content, making it as simple as possible while maximizing its learning value. They needed a complete platform, including a mobile application, in a structured and usable way, so that refugees could access it and learn from it on the go.

The need for a mobile-friendly solution was inevitable, as most refugees have limited access to computers, even though the NGO is also trying to address that.

I approached this project just as I would any corporate project, where I always focus on high-end UX and corporate design. This is not a superficial need, but an essential part of a high-end learning experience.

Once I finalized the visual design, I created the structure in iSpring Learn LMS, which allows for a fully supported mobile application. I built up the topic structure and the platform experience so that users could easily manage and maintain their profiles, while also having personal contact with their volunteer mentor or contact person. Usually, all refugees are connected to one or more contact persons from the NGO, and that personal connection is vital. I made sure that communication remained a huge part of the learning experience.

The built-in notification feature on the app was invaluable in this, allowing the learner and mentor to stay in the loop. On the platform, I created specific teams, project members, and learning groups to make sure they could stay connected, ask questions, and provide answers. At the same time, they could complete the learning modules, but the focus was on the interactive conversations within these virtual learning rooms.
